About Vintage Necklaces Vintage Necklaces come in a huge variety of shapes and sizes here is a brief overeview of some of the types available: Necklace: This is the general term used for any piece of jewellery hung around the neck and so you will often find a necklace reffered to by what it is made of: Gold necklace, pearl necklace or glass bead necklace for example. Here are some of the names given to the different vintage necklace lengths: 14- 16 inches - Choker - worn around the neck 18 inches - Princess - Sits over collar bones 20 - 24 inches - Matinee - Sits over clothing 30 - 36 inches - opera - this can be worn single or double Longer than this up to 60 inches is a Muff Chain Popular in Victorian times or a flapper necklace can be longer. Locket : Lockets are made to hold something, a photo or a small momento such as a lock of hair or a pressed dried flower given by a loved one. These can be opening so that the contents are hidden or have two glass isdes so that the contents can be seen. Lockets are normally hung from a chain or a ribbon arround the neck Pendant: A pendant hangs on a chain or ribbon arround the neck but would not normally open like a locket. Pendants vary in size from small charms about 1 cm long to several times that length. They can be made of virtually any material imaginable as long as they are stylish, decorative or have sentimental value to the wearer. Chain: Chains arround the neck are usually made of Gold or Silver, sometimes several chains of differnt lengths are worn together depending upon the desired effect. Lavalier Necklace: The lavalier was popular in Edwardian times and the art deco era. It is a fancy pendant often set with tiny gems and hangs from a chain.
